Gothenburg Climate Pioneer Arbon Earth Secures Historic Carbon Removal Permit in Indonesia
GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN - Swedish climate tech company Arbon Earth has become the first company to receive official regulatory approval in Indonesia to conduct deep-sea marine carbon capture (mCDR). By cultivating seaweed that naturally absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and then lowering it to the deep ocean floor, Arbon Earth leverages the ocean's vast capacity to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
While seaweed naturally sinks and stores carbon on the seafloor without human intervention, Arbon Earth scales this process up on nature's own terms to enable large-scale carbon removal.
The expansion into Indonesian waters marks a major turning point for the company. Arbon Earth already operates an active production site in Kenya, but this new permit multiplies their production capacity, unlocking the ability to remove carbon dioxide at a truly global scale. Testing will begin shortly off the coast of Lombok island, with discussions already underway with relevant authorities to expand to additional regions.
Working hand-in-hand with Indonesian authority KKP (Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries), Arbon Earth will gradually scale up its operations to ensure both environmental integrity and maximum climate impact.
